L.A.-based songwriter Monk Turner is an artist. His medium is the concept album.
Based on the principal that music is not a privilege, it’s a right, Turner has released over 20 albums in collaboration with Creative Commons artists who share a "copyleft" vision of breaking through the constraints of copyright and distribution to deliver free music to the people.
Turner got his start as a principal songwriter and performer in various music groups. After the break up of his last band, he found he preferred working with musicians as part of a freeform collective and began recording concept albums at home on his four-track. Almost a decade later, he is still at it though his audience has quickly grown from ten to tens of thousands of listeners. Turner's albums are designed to stand alone as concept art therefore live performances are a rarity.
