"Hershfield’s unscripted interviews include questions that we’d all want answered but might be wary of tackling, his empathic manner allowing him to touch potentially raw nerves without even a waft of snideness. He earns his guests’ respect by genuinely absorbing their answers and delving deep into their person to find where their songs come from and why they feel compelled to share them." Paul Rogers, LA Weekly "...Hershfield's solo show, ...IS GOOD centers on discovering the indie, rock-pop-punk-electro beats of LA. An antidote to the sanitized Volvo-centric sounds of Morning Becomes Eclectic, Hershfield invites local gems from LA's underground to perform and be interviewed in their "studio." The results are nothing but amazing - musicians are free to talk and play their music without worries or reprimand, giving his show an air of intimacy hard to find on commercial radio stations." Laura Hauther, KCET IS GOOD w/ Jon Hershfield is a weekly two-hour music show airing live and archived on www.killradio.org Thursdays 10a-12p (pst) (and occasional Wednesdays and Sundays - see schedule). It is divided into two parts: The first hour of the program is a dj set of acid jazz, trip hop, hip hop, electronica, indie rock, underplayed b-sides, remixes, covers and more. Noticeably absent from this mix is overplayed corporate merchandising music. Jon comes on the air every few songs to talk about what compelled him to buy this from the clearance bin at Amoeba Music or wherever it came from. This part of IS GOOD is about Jon's personally huge and hugely personal collection of local and international music. The second half of ...IS GOOD is an hour-long interview and acoustic set by a quality up-and-coming LA-based artist/band. It generally includes 3-4 tracks played from cd, 3-5 live in-studio songs, and discussion in between each. The segment is unscripted and unrehearsed and the music, as well as the musician, is stripped of pretense. This is about what makes a musician take the leap, what they want to give to and get from their audience. While comparisons have been made to KCRWs Morning Becomes Eclectic, what makes these interviews different from any other band interview is that the focus is on the musicians themselves and their inspiration as much as it's on the music. It's more than When's the new cd come out? and Where's the next sold-out show? It's, Why did you pick up your instrument in the first place? The audience gets the sense that this is what it might be like if they actually spent time with the band. Jon becomes the benevolent but persistent straggler at the afterparty, sitting in the musicians living room, egging them on to give us a tune. People talk a lot of trash about LA being void of culture, but we have the richest pool of musicians on the planet and IS GOOD w/ Jon Hershfield can prove it.
