"Forget the wintery cold that rots your days. Forget that this discographic period is rather quiet. Forget the worries of daily life. Close your eyes, and visualize a place where the sun never ceases to shine and where nothing is as important as the times are good. One would easily imagine that The French Semester comes from such a place. If the trend seems to be a return to the 90s, The French Semester has chosen to explore the voice of indie pop, joyfully igniting hit upon hit, worthy of an eventual Pavement reunion. The relaxation is required, of course, but its rather towards Luna that we would look for points of reference, for the voice could sometimes be mistaken for Dean Wareham. Stuffed with a clear and rather pearly sound, the guitars of the group serve as a point of anchorage to the veritable flights that are as wild as they are joyful (Subway to the Sky or even Your Master Plan, unstoppable). Add to this a finely sharpened melodic sense and one gets easily closer to the type of album which managed to top our end of year list. Fifteen tracks, almost none superfluous: the album has the rare achievement of never losing steam after an initial canon shot, and we are now within the group's galaxy. Me and the Mockingbird, accordingly, makes for a beautiful comet which has us happily forgetting the existence of all the Dandy Warhols of the earth … And as they recently made elogy to the madness of artists like Syd Barret or Daniel Johnston, The French Semester prove well and good that their pop rests it feet on the ground, while being friendly with the stars." -MilleFeuille (France) 12/08/08
