L.A.’s Rhone Occupation offer this lovely EP for free download on their site. Yes, you’re inundated with a million free solicitations. Great! Tour time-shares! (Yawn.) But this “free offer!!!!” is actually worth the time and memory space. The quartet shares my supremely melodic indie-pop taste (“RIYL Decemberists, Elliott Smith, Wilco, Death Cab, Nada Surf, Long Winters, even Radiohead”), and they have the writing ‘elan and even the delicate dexterity to pull off similar joys. (Anyone can rock out, right?) They can turn on a dime, from the upbeat acoustic pop of “The Worst of Me” to the solo tickling guitars and vocal disconsolation of “A Place”, with talented singer/writer Jacob Summers educing the same deep-seated, sincere sympathy of a Ben Gibbard (similar voice, too).
